Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came out in support Tuesday of President Barack Obama's plan for military strikes in Syria following the deployment of chemical weapons.

"Secretary Clinton supports the president's effort to enlist the Congress in pursuing a strong and targeted response to the Assad regime's horrific use of chemical weapons," a Clinton aide told Politico.

Despite her prior support for a plan that would have armed the Syrian opposition, the former secretary of state has been notably absent from the debate over potential use of military force in Syria.

Administration officials including Clinton's successor, John Kerry, and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel testified Tuesday before the Senate Armed Forces Committee to make the case for military force.
