NPR host Michel Martin didn't know why Presidents George W. Bush and George H. W. Bush were not present at the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, questioning why they would miss it Wednesday on CNN's The Lead.
"There are two other living presidents, President George W. Bush and George H. W. Bush," she said. "President George H. W. Bush, Bush 41, who I covered, had a very strong record on civil rights. I was wondering why he wasn't there. Why weren't they there?"
No one set her straight at that moment, but fill-in host John Berman explained, after a commercial break, that their absence was due to health issues. The elder Bush, age 89, is in Maine and couldn't make the trip to Washington, while his son is still in Dallas recovering from a heart procedure earlier this month.
