A former aide to the Hartford mayor’s office was arrested yesterday on multiple charges relating to his illegal use of city property.

Jared Kupiec, who was the chief of staff to Mayor Pedro Segarra, was found to be in possession of a city vehicle more than two weeks after he resigned from his position, according to the Hartford Courant.

The matter came to the attention of the police while they were investigating a series of car break-ins, one of which happened to involve a city vehicle.

When investigators initially asked Kupiec how the vehicle ended up parked in front of his residence, he denied involvement and told them he didn’t know how it got there.

Kupiec is being charged with using a motor vehicle without the owner’s permission, as well as interfering with a police investigation due to his initial denial.

In the months leading up to his resignation, Kupiec was criticized for charging a $700 New Year’s Eve dinner to his city-issued credit card.

Kupiec was released on a promise to appear in court next month.
