Perry Announces He Will Not Seek Re-Election

Gov. Rick Perry (R., Tex.) announced he would not seek another term as governor of Texas in 2014 before a crowd of supporters in San Antonio Monday.

"The time has come to pass on the mantle of leadership," he said. "Today, I am announcing I will not seek re-election as Governor of Texas. I will spend the next 18 months working to create more jobs, opportunity and innovation. I will actively lead this great state, and I'll also pray and reflect and work to determine my own future path. I make this announcement with a deep sense of humility and appreciation for the time and the trust the people of this state have given me."

Perry took office in December of 2000, after former Texas Governor George W. Bush was elected President of the United States. He is the longest-serving chief executive in state history.
