A bomb exploded at a busy intersection in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday, killing at least 18 and injuring 117, according to the Erawan Medical Emergency Center.
CNN reported that the blast occurred near the Erawan Shrine, a major tourist attraction in an area studded by hotels and shopping centers. It is thus far unknown who is responsible for the bombing.
Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan alleged that the individuals responsible "targeted foreigners ... to damage tourism and the economy," according to BBC. A Thai government spokesman confirmed that foreigners were among those injured in the blast.
"We will hunt them down," Wongsuwan said of those responsible.
The Bangkok Post reported that police said three kilograms of TNT were stuffed into a pipe inside of the Hindu shrine. Police also found an electronic circuit close to the scene believed to have been used in the bombing. Despite earlier suspicions, authorities did not find more bombs.
Witnesses reported body parts scattered at the scene of the explosion. One individual who witnessed the aftermath of the blast recalled, "When I arrived they had already cleared the bodies from the ground outside the Erawan shrine but there were and there are still pieces of human flesh strewn around the intersection; it's really graphic."
