Former Obama campaign gurus David Axelrod and Jim Messina have taken their multimillion-dollar consultancies global, so it was only a matter a time before they faced off against each other.
Messina is currently making six-figures as an adviser to British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose Conservative Party (yes, you read that right) is trying to hold power ahead of national elections in 2015. Axelrod is advising Cameron’s strongest challenger, Ed Miliband of the Labor Party. The New York Times reports:
You may have heard that Obama’s top campaign gurus, David Axelrod and Jim Messina, are competing against each other in Great Britain, where local elections were held this week. (Parliamentary elections are scheduled for May of 2015.)
Messina is advising Prime Minister David Cameron and the Conservative Party, because why not? If your goal is to create a global political consulting empire, it helps to be ideologically promiscuous.
Axelrod, meanwhile, is working for the Labor Party, which is hoping to return to power next year. He got off to a rocky start, and was mocked after misspelling Labor leader Ed Miliband’s name on Twitter.

The headline from this week’s Organizing For America summit was the president’s remark that OFA volunteers are doing “God’s work.” Nothing, though, on who was in the audience during the invitation-only, “intimate roundtable discussion” between the president, his 2008 campaign manager David Plouffe, and his 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina. I would like to know who was there. I would like to know who was there because I would like to tell them, as gently as possible, that they are being bilked. Messina is taking their money and building an empire with it.
Former Obama campaign manager Jim Messina spoke last year at a government communications forum sponsored by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country that has been widely criticized for cracking down on free speech, according to reports.
Jim Messina, President Barack Obama’s former campaign manager, is still making $7,000 per month from Obama’s 2012 campaign, Politico reports.
