President Donald Trump pulled in a record $6.5 million in contributions in the weeks following the 2016 elections.

While most president-elects halt fundraising following an election, Trump continued his efforts, which could directly benefit other politicians and groups in the short term.

Federal Election Commission records show that Trump finished the year with a war chest of $16.1 million, with $6.5 million of that amount coming after he had defeated Hillary Clinton, Bloomberg reports.

Trump sold ornaments from his website featuring his campaign slogan and other items during his December "Thank you" tour.

In addition to saving the money for reelection efforts, the money could be used to benefit other Republican politicians or can be given to groups that could help his policy agenda.

Trump could transfer funds to the Republican National Committee, give it to Republican candidates for the 2018 elections, or transfer it to a nonprofit that could help push his agenda, Bloomberg notes.

Trump's money haul shows no sign of slowing down, as his campaign committee's website currently features a "January End of Month" goal.

"The media can't wait to get their hands on our first fundraising report and say how the Democrat establishment and other far left organizations raised more money than us," the website states.

"Contribute $35 or more now to help us fight back and show them that the American people are UNITED behind our president."
