The comedian ex-girlfriend of rapper 50 Cent is set to provide the entertainment at an annual retreat held by House Democrats this week in Baltimore, Maryland, according to a Politico report.
Chelsea Handler, a comedian who gained notoriety partially due to her affinity for posting topless pictures of herself on the internet, will perform at the retreat's closing reception on Friday.
Handler has been a leading voice in the fight for a woman's right to be topless, arguing in a piece for Harper's Bazaar that "if we want to walk around with our boobs out, I think that's our prerogative."
"I'm not trying to be a role model to kids, because I don't have any children, but I do think everyone should have a free spirit," Handler wrote. "I also think that it's great that after all these years, I've finally found a way to utilize my giant jugs."
Handler began posting topless pictures of herself on Instagram after the social media platform removed a picture she posted of herself posing as Russian president Vladimir Putin shirtless on a horse.
"Putin is topless in his photo, I was too, why should that be different? We're both human beings. We both have the same parts. Why is it different? That's where it kind of started," the comedian wrote.
"It just didn't make any sense to me, so I vowed to keep making the point over and over again so that the next time I post a topless picture, it is not news."
Handler is the host of Chelsea, Netflix's first talk show. Its first season, which aired in 2016, was not received well by critics.
"What’s the matter with Netflix’s ‘Chelsea’? Pretty much everything," wrote Scott Porch of Decider. The site does not divulge viewership, but rumors circulated that the ratings were "abysmal."
The Democrats' goal for the retreat is "hammering out a messaging strategy to counter President Donald Trump," according to Politico.
Handler attacked immigrant Melania Trump last month, telling Variety that she would not interview the first lady because "she can barely speak English." Time magazine declared that the comment put Handler in "hot water."
At last month's "Women's March" Handler denounced her party affiliation, saying that being a Democrat is "too divisive."
