Pence Rips Clinton Over 'Basket of Deplorables' Comment

October 4, 2016

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R.) ripped Hillary Clinton at Tuesday night's debate over her "basket of deplorables" comment that she made in reference to those who support the Donald Trump for president.

Pence, taking exception to the accusation that his campaign was driven by insults, shot back about Clinton's comments that half of Trump's supporters were deplorable. She later walked back the comment.

"To be honest with you, if Donald Trump had said all the things you said he said and the way you said he said them, he still wouldn't have a fraction of the insults that Hillary Clinton leveled when she said that half of our supporters were a basket of deplorables."

"She said the were irredeemable, they were not American," Pence added. "I mean, it's extraordinary ... So, Senator, this insult-driven campaign, that's small potatoes compared to Hillary Clinton calling half of Donald Trump supporters a basket of deplorables."

Sen. Tim Kaine (D., Va.) excused Clinton's "basket of deplorables" blunder by saying she regretted saying it the next day.
