Matthews Compares Having Non-White Ethnicity to Being Physically Handicapped

May 13, 2016

MSNBC host Chris Matthews compared having non-white ethnicity to being physically handicapped Friday while interviewing Dr. Ben Carson.

Matthews asked Carson, a former 2016 Republican candidate who endorsed Donald Trump after he dropped out, whether Trump had empathy for people with "handicaps from birth" such as "ethnicity or whatever."

"Have you ever tried to make Donald Trump more empathetic?" Matthews asked. "In other words, you've said, you know, there are some people that've had handicaps from birth, whether it's ethnicity or whatever, or it's a physical handicap or they're born into poverty. It's hard for them to pull themselves up, even in a free society. Does he get it?"

"Some of these many reporters that the Washington Post has sent to follow and try to dig up dirt on Trump, why don't they find the people who have worked with him or who have worked for him for long periods of time?" Carson asked.

Matthews has made odd racial remarks on a number of prior occasions. He was forced to apologize on MSNBC earlier this year for numerous references to the Cuban heritages of Sens. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) and Ted Cruz (R., Texas)
