Hillary Clinton will not say where she stands on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) despite cable news' best efforts..
"It’s a lack of leadership," Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin said.
The TPP has split Clinton’s party and places her between President Obama and the anti-trade progressives she hopes to garner support from.
"She is alienating both sides by not taking a position but I think if she took a position there would be a firestorm and by laying low and hoping the thing goes away—the press does not like it; we do not like it; we think it is a lack of leadership—I know we both agree," Halperin said.
If Clinton follows her recent positioning and opposes the TPP, she runs the risk of being called a flip-flopper because of her previous support for the deal as Secretary of State. If Clinton sides with the president, she could provoke a primary challenger from the left.
Bernie Sanders has already hit Clinton for her silence on the issue. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has made moves to coalesce progressives into make him Clinton’s primary challenger.
