A fashion designer is encouraging others to join her in refusing to create clothing for future First Lady Melania Trump.
Sophie Theallet, whose clothing has been worn on multiple occasions by current First Lady Michelle Obama, is taking her stance because of Donald Trump's rhetoric during the presidential campaign, the Hill reported Friday.
"As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next first lady," Theallet wrote in a letter this week. "The rhetoric of racism, sexism, and xenophobia unleashed by her husband's presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by."
Theallet said money is not her bottom line but rather her artistic freedom and desire to design in a better world.
Not every fashion designer is joining Theallet, though. Others, such as Marcus Wainwright of Rag & Bone, are deciding that if they want an "inclusive society," then they must include Melania Trump and put politics aside.
