Former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke announced Tuesday that he had accepted a position with the pro-Trump super PAC America First Action.
Clarke will become a spokesman and senior advisor to the PAC, Politico reported. Clarke announced his departure from Milwaukee County law enforcement last week.
Clarke is known as a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, having stumped for the president on TV and appeared at the 2016 Republican National Convention. He has also attracted controversy: during his tenure as Milwaukee County Sheriff, the jail Clarke oversaw was accused of mistreating inmates on several occasions. Some staff members remain under investigation.
Brian O. Walsh, America First Action’s president, released a statement on Tuesday the describe Clarke has having "devoted his life" to "making America safe again."
In his own statement, Clarke said that the appointment gave him "the chance to do what I love most — promote President Trump’s agenda, including his fierce support for the American law enforcement officer, and ensure that the will of the American people who got President Trump elected is not derailed by the left or the self-serving Washington establishment."
Clarke has previously claimed to have been offered and accepted a position within the Trump Administration at the Department of Homeland Security. He subsequently withdrew his name from consideration for the position.
