Pew: Fewer than Half Support Path to Citizenship

Fewer than half of all Americans say illegal immigrants should have the ability to apply for citizenship, according to a new Pew Research survey.

Only 44 percent of Americans support a pathway to citizenship, despite support for illegal immigrants having a way to stay in the country legally at 73 percent. Twenty-five percent said those in the country illegally should not be able to stay in the United States.

In the survey, 75 percent of Americans said the U.S. immigration system either needs major changes or needs to be completely rebuilt, with 53 percent saying the government can do "a lot more" when it comes to securing the U.S. border.
