Obamacare—Raising Taxes on Middle Class

September 19, 2012

Obamacare’s tax penalty for not getting health insurance will hit nearly 6 million Americans, primarily members of the middle class, AP reported.

Congressional budget analysts are now estimating that "nearly 6 million Americans—most of them in the middle class—will face a tax penalty for not carrying medical coverage once President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law is fully in place."

That is 2 million more than a previous estimate found, an increase of 50 percent. The average penalty will be nearly $1,200.

This penalty comes as the average median household income in America has continued to drop even after the recession ended in 2009—falling over $2,000 over two years, from $52,195 in 2009 to $50,054 in 2011.
