One of the extremists identified as a suicide bomber in the Brussels terrorist attacks held a cleaning position with the European Parliament for a short period of time, EU officials said Wednesday.
The perpetrator worked there during the summer for a month in 2009 and a month in 2010, according to a statement from the European Parliament.
While EU officials did not disclose the jihadist’s identity, the Agency France-Presse reported that it was Najim Laachraoui, one of the two suicide bombers who detonated at Brussels airport earlier this month.
Laachraoui was already being sought by Belgian authorities for constructing the suicide vests used in the November Paris attacks that killed 130 people.
EU officials said the cleaning firm that hired him submitted proof that he did not have a criminal record at the time.
Officials identified Laachraoui and Ibrahim El Bakraoui as the two extremists who themselves up at the Brussels airport during the March 22 attacks. The blasts also hit the Maelbeek subway station, killing at least 35 people and wounding roughly 300 others.
The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombings, which left at least four Americans dead.
