Rogers: We Can't Get Obama Admin to Address Al Qaeda Buildup in Syria

'They are a huge and growing international threat like nothing I've ever seen'

Outgoing Chair of the House Intelligence Committee Mike Rogers (R., Mich.) warned he and his colleagues in Congress have been unable to get the Obama administration to engage Syria and address the country's growing Al Qaeda presence.

Rogers, speaking Tuesday in a radio interview with Brian Kilmeade, said he does not have confirmation of recent reports Syria unleashed more chemical attacks. However the Assad regime minimized cooperation with the planned destruction of their chemical stockpiles some time ago, he said.

The House Intel chair cautioned Syria has seen an enormous "pooling" of foreign terrorists looking to engage in "jihad tourism." Consequently, Rogers added, eastern Syria has become a safe haven for Al Qaeda forces supplied by Al Qaeda in Iraq.

"We just can’t get the president or his administration engaged to understand that you can’t just hide from it. Just because it’s not on the front page of the paper does not mean it’s not a threat to the United States or our allies."
