Katherine Archuleta, the director of the Office of Personnel Management, resigned Friday after the government agency admitted to suffering a massive data breach.

Archuleta confirmed the move to OPM staff in an email, CNN reported.

"I write to you this afternoon to share that earlier today, I offered and the President accepted my resignation as the Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management," wrote Archuleta. "Leading this agency and serving with all of you has been the highlight of my career."

OPM said Thursday that more than 21 million individuals inside and outside the government fell victim to a hack supposedly carried out by Chinese sources, in addition to the more than 4 million current and former government employees that the agency disclosed had been compromised in a separate breach acknowledged last month.

Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers called for Archuleta's resignation following the release of details about the massive hack.
