Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii) is extremely worried that if the United States arms Syrian rebels that this will lead to the overthrow of brutal dictator Bashar al-Assad.
Gabbard, a liberal champion of many progressive causes, could not determine if the overthrow of Assad—who has systematically murdered hundreds of thousands with chemical weapons and conventional arms—is a good thing.
"Voting to support this proposal is actually a vote to overthrow Assad," Gabbard was quoted as saying by Buzzfeed. "Because overthrowing Assad is the primary objective of the so-called Free Syrian Army … which would make the situation in the region even worse and more unstable than it is today."
It was unclear as of press time if Gabbard actually understood that the precise goal of arming the Syrian rebels is to overthrow Assad and stop his bloody oppression of the Syrian people.
