Rep. Ro Khanna (D., Calif.) called for an Internet "bill of rights" similar to those in Europe during an appearance Wednesday on CNBC.
Khanna, whose California district includes Silicon Valley, said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's appearances on Capitol Hill revealed a "knowledge gap" about social media among lawmakers.
"I think it revealed a knowledge gap," he said. "There are [members of Congress] who don't fully have a grasp on how social media works, and I think they weren't able to push back to get a firm commitment. In Europe, we have a regulatory framework called the General Data Regulation protections, and we need a similar internet bill of rights here in the United States that would give consumers access to data like they have access to their health care data or credit data."
Asked if he feared increased regulations on tech companies would hold back Silicon Valley, Khanna said the U.S. should not wholesale adopt the European framework.
"There are common-sense regulations we can adopt that would protect people's freedoms, the right to know where your data is going or where your data is, the right to be able to correct it, the right to be able to move it," he said.
