Greta Lights Up Chris Murphy On Harry Reid's Koch Comments

Dem. Senator refuses to acknowledge Reid's chronic pattern of smears

Fox News host Greta Van Susteren tore into Sen. Chris Murphy (D., Conn.) over Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D., Nev.) smear of the Koch brothers Tuesday evening.

Van Susteren repeatedly pressed Murphy on the Senate Majority Leader's comments last week where Reid asserted all of the "Obamacare horror stories" in Koch affiliated ads are untrue

Murphy countered Reid walked that statement back and conceded "some people will have bad experiences" under the Affordable Care Act.

The FNC host interjected she had not heard Reid recant his blanket charge that all of the Koch Obamacare ads are lies.

Reid took to Twitter later that day to qualify his argument, but did not return to the floor or make any public statement apologizing.

Van Susteren proceeded to excoriate Reid for his chronic pattern of blatant smears, citing the Nevada senator's spurious 2012 charge that GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney did not pay any taxes that year.

The Connecticut senator defended Reid, arguing "somebody has to push back" against the the supposed lies told by the Koch brothers, but did not address Reid's pattern of slandering individuals for political purposes.

With respect to the contested t.v. spots, Murphy did not explain how the billionaire philanthropists are directly culpable for the content of the ads, only loosely asserting "allies of the Republicans in the Senate are spending hundreds of millions of dollars lying about the Affordable Care Act on the air."

The FNC host replied her primary issue is not with Reid expressing his opinion some advertisements contain falsehoods, but that no one confronts him when he says "terrible things" and Senate Democrats continue to allow him to be their leader:

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN: I don't mind that he is tough. Actually I admire somebody who is tough. I was a trial lawyer be tough. Be tough. But, the facts, the problem is that he is very loose. He has said things about even President Obama that were particularly unflattering that he had to walk those back. He has loose lips and he had to say terrible things and your leader.

CHRIS MURPHY: I think right now's important for the American people to know there is hundreds of millions of dollars being spent saying things that are wrong. I know there are people with bad experiences with the healthcare law, and listen my impression is that Senator Reid has corrected that.

VAN SUSTEREN: I don't know when, you say that but I never heard it.

MURPHY: I stand by the idea that there should be somebody on the Senate floor talking about that not only the fact that a lot of these ads are wrong, but we should have some space to talk about good things that are happening.

VAN SUSTEREN: I'm actually with you on that, totally with you. Let's say the truth on the Senate floor, he owns the Senate floor as the Senate majority leader, he should be the last person on the floor with the falsehood and at least not going back and correcting it.
