First Lady Michelle Obama is growing German turnips in the White House garden, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
Mrs. Obama offered students visiting the White House this week a "healthy meal," which her anti-obesity group Let’s Move claimed was "harvested from the Kitchen Garden [Wednesday] morning."
"The students and First Lady prepared their fresh garden meal together, mixing seasonal veggies, like broccoli, peas, and kohlrabi, into a delicious lunch along with grilled honey chicken and noodles," according to the Let’s Move blog.
Kohlrabi is German for turnip, and "taste a bit like broccoli stems."
Nazis served kohlrabi in prison camps to American POWs during World War II.
The multicultural dish Mrs. Obama served also included arugula, kale, endive, tatsoi, broccoli, "low sodium soy sauce," Dijon mustard, and Soba noodles.
