Jury finds Gosnell guilty of murder on three counts

Abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell was found guilty Monday on three counts of first degree murder for the deaths of infants at his Philadelphia clinic.

Gosnell severed the spinal cords of the three infants by "snipping" them, or using scissors to cut their necks after they were born.

The trial will now move into the sentencing phase to determine whether Gosnell, 72, will face the death penalty or life in prison.

The abortionist faced four counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Infants A, B, C, and D, as they were known in the trial; the judge threw out three additional counts of first-degree murder earlier in the trial. Gosnell also faced a third-degree murder charge for the death of Karnamaya Mongar, who died in 2009 after a drug overdose at his clinic.

Gosnell operated a gruesome, unsanitary clinic in Philadelphia that was little regulated by city and state authorities. Inside his clinic, Gosnell executed his "snipping" technique, body parts were stored in jars, untrained employees administered anesthesia, and women given drugs to induce labor delivered babies in restroom stalls.

He was arrested in January 2011 and charged with 263 crimes.
