Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones launched the New York Times on this day in 1851.

The formerly named New York Daily Times featured stories on slave riots in Pennsylvania and major events in Europe, including coverage of now extinct countries such as Prussia and the Papal States.

The Times has been awarded 112 Pulitzer Prizes, the most given to any publication. It is now owned by the New York Times Company, a conglomerate started by Adolph Ochs in 1896.
