Former Ohio Governor Questions Romney's Patriotism

September 4, 2012

Former Ohio governor Ted Strickland questioned Mitt Romney's "economic patriotism" in a Tuesday speech before the Democratic National Committee.

"Mitt has so little economic patriotism, that even his money needs a passport," Strickland said. "It’s summers on the beaches of the Cayman Islands and winters on the slopes of the Swiss Alps."

"In Matthew 6:21, the scriptures teach us that where your treasure is, there will your heart be also," Strickland continued. "And my friends, my friends, any man who aspires to be our president should keep both his treasure and his heart in the United States of America."

Earlier this year, President Obama said he would not criticize an opponent's patriotism during a Florida fundraiser for Sen. Bill Nelson (D., Fla.).

"I’m a firm believer that whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, that you’re a patriot, you care about this country, you love this country," Obama said, according to Politico. "And so I’m not somebody who, when we’re in a political contest, suggests somehow that one side or the other has a monopoly on love of country."
