Republican David Yancey on Thursday won the tie-breaker for Virginia's 94th House of Delegates district over Democrat Shelly Simonds after state officials picked his name out of a decorative bowl.
Simonds was present for the "by lot" decision in Richmond and had to watch as she was defeated by the cruel hands of fate. Yancey didn't even show up and won the contest.
The two had tied their race with 11,608 votes apiece after a recount and subsequent legal challenge that awarded Yancey an additional vote.
Those are the breaks.
If Simonds does not challenge the result and it holds up, the Republicans will hold a 51-49 advantage in the House of Delegates, clinging to a majority that shrunk from 66-34 after the Republicans took a drubbing in November's state elections.
