As election returns came in Tuesday night, NBC News anchor Chuck Todd said Democrats failed to get signature wins in statewide elections.
National attention was heaped on Democratic candidates, such as Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum and Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke, but they were not able to score victories.
"Democrats got the House, but in the statewide races, no signature win for Democrats, whether it’s Florida, Georgia, Texas," Todd said.
"What’s your explanation?" Todd asked Fred Yang, a Democratic pollster.
"First of all, still a lot of close races," Yang said. "We have Missouri, we have Montana, which will probably be a win. I think Senator Nelson could pull it out in Florida."
Yang said the levels of support for President Donald Trump are enough to help those Republicans win.
Missouri ended up going red, with Republican challenger Josh Hawley defeating Sen. Claire McCaskill (D.). Also, Sen. Nelson (D., Fla.) apparently did not pull it out in Florida, with Rick Scott holding a narrow lead with nearly all precincts reporting.
