Duckworth: Democrats Can't Just Care About Identity Politics

February 14, 2018

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D., Ill.) said in an interview released Wednesday that Democrats cannot just care about identity politics if they want to be successful.

"What the Midwest can teach the Democratic Party is: we have to care about everyone. We can't just care about minorities, or immigrants, or identity politics," Duckworth told Politico's "Women Rule" podcast in a clip flagged by Fox News host Dana Perino.

"If we just focus on the left wing side of the party, or the more conservative side of the party, it doesn't get us anywhere," Duckworth added.

When asked whether Democrats will retake the Senate in 2018, Duckworth replied, "I don't know."

Perino discussed Duckworth's comments with Fox News politics editor Chris Stirewalt, who said that the Illinois Democrat was trying to tell her voters that their party needs to be able to compromise and reach out to white working-class voters.
