Clinton Makes Awful Olympics Reference in Slam on Trump

August 11, 2016

Hillary Clinton’s speechwriters worked in a clumsy reference to U.S. Olympic athletes Michael Phelps and Simone Biles during her economic address slamming Donald Trump on Thursday in Michigan.

"Mr. Trump may talk a big game on trade, but his approach is based on fear, not strength," Clinton said. "Fear that we can’t compete with the rest of the world, even when the rules are fair. Fear that our country has no choice but to hide behind walls. If Team USA was as fearful as Trump, Michael Phelps and Simone Biles would be cowering in the locker room, afraid to come out to compete!"

The crowd greeted this strange analogy with cheers. Phelps, a swimmer, and Biles, a gymnast, have already brought home gold medals in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"Instead, they’re winning gold medals," Clinton said. "America isn’t afraid to compete."
