CBS correspondent Jan Crawford reported on the Republican "field day" with Hillary Clinton's humorous remark that she and former President Bill Clinton were "dead broke" when they left the White House.
Crawford reported since leaving office in 2000, the Clintons have raked in more than $100 million simply through speechmaking, with another $30 to $40 million in book contracts and royalties.
"We came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt," she said during an ABC interview Monday. "We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea's education. You know, it was not easy."
What's "dead broke" to the Clintons, Republicans said after Clinton's statement, is certainly not the experience of ordinary Americans.
Particularly cringeworthy was her remark about the "struggle" to pay for mortgages for multiple "houses."
Clinton tried to clear the air on Good Morning America Tuesday by saying, "I fully appreciate how hard life is for so many Americans today."
