Former CBS anchor Dan Rather said there needed to be a long investigation into the IRS targeting scandal Tuesday on MSNBC, telling host Rachel Maddow it was an embarrassment and a warning for President Obama's administration.
"If it reaches the level of even a mid-level of the Obama administration, then it's serious trouble for him," Rather said. "Until and unless it does this, it's a benefit to the Republicans because they can keep him on the defensive ... I think in the overall picture, what we have right now is an embarrassment for President Obama and a warning to him, if you will ... Make no mistake about it, it was no small thing in and of itself to target one side of the political spectrum, say we're going to make things difficult particularly in this election year. Serious business."
