Chairman of the New Jersey State Planning Commission and former Democratic Mayor Ed McKenna was arrested and charged for driving while intoxicated earlier this week.
New Jersey State Police said in a statement Wednesday that McKenna "traveled along the guardrail, then stopped in a position facing oncoming traffic in the right lane" before continuing to drive south "in the direction of oncoming cars" in his black 2012 Mercedes sedan.
McKenna submitted to a breathalyzer test and was subsequently arrested and charged. Although the test results remain undisclosed, law enforcement said McKenna "blew very high."
McKenna served as mayor of Red Bank, N.J, from 1991 to 2006. McKenna struck a pedestrian walking through a hospital crosswalk in 2009.
He was involved in another accident in 2000, leaving the scene before police arrived. McKenna’s wife explained that the then-mayor had taken a painkiller and was sleeping when troopers arrived at his home.
