British Parliament on Lockdown After Reports of Shots Fired

Police treating situation as terrorist incident

The leader of Britain's House of Commons said Wednesday a man was shot by police after stabbing a police officer outside of Parliament.

British police said the situation is being treated as a terrorist incident. Both houses of Parliament remain on lockdown.

The Metropolitan Police evacuated the area after receiving reports of an incident on Westminster Bridge. Witnesses said a vehicle crashed into a railing on the bridge after striking several people. Dozens of people are reported injured.

Prime Minister Theresa May was in the House of Commons for Parliament's weekly Question Time. She has since been safely evacuated.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident. The U.S. State Department issued an alert warning travelers to "remain vigilant" and "exercise caution."
