Maryland Residents Upset Over Ongoing Problems With Obamacare

February 28, 2014

Maryland residents are growing weary as problems with the Maryland health exchange website continue to increase.

The Maryland Obamacare website cannot tell whether or not people who signed up for Medicaid are actually qualified for it or not.

In an effort not to hurt those who qualify for Medicaid, the state will now cover millions of Maryland residents, a move that will cost millions of dollars.

Christina Ococha, a Maryland resident, told WJLA, "I’m concerned, I’m worried because you don’t really know what is going to happen the next minute."

"When the whole thing started, I thought it was a good idea. And then I tried to get on the Maryland system and couldn’t. To find out that my problems are going to cost me money even though I had to go to another place- I find that a little upsetting," said Sarah Toppins, another Maryland resident.

The Maryland healthcare website, which has already cost $200 million, will cost taxpayers an additional $30.5 million over the next 18 months, all due to a glitch in the system.

The system cannot track which Medicaid recipients no longer qualify for the benefit because their income has increased.

Despite firing the contractor responsible for the Maryland website glitch, the state is still without a plan as to how to resolve the problem.

Marta Schley, a Maryland resident, expressed her frustration with WJLA-DC, saying, "Somebody certainly should have done their homework better."

"It’s unfortunate that tax dollars are being wasted like that. If it’s not working, you try something different, you don’t keep throwing money at something that’s not working," agreed William Mathis.
