The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that 33 military personnel, including a pregnant woman, have been infected with the Zika virus, CNN reported.
U.S. service members are believed to have contracted the virus overseas, but it is hard to provide a specific location for where they were infected, Air Force Ben Sakrisson, the Pentagon spokesman said.
"Florida authorities last week reported the first signs of local transmission of the virus in the continental United States in a Miami neighborhood," the Reuters reported.
"The Zika outbreak was first detected last year in Brazil," Reuters said. "U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect market by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies."
