South Carolina Democratic chairman Dick Harpootlian predicted Friday night a Democrat next year would "send Nikki Haley back to wherever the hell she came from," Politico reports.
Haley was raised in South Carolina and attended college in the state. Her parents were Sikh immigrants.
Harpootlian told Politico he was referring to Lexington County, S.C., and "anybody implying anything different is attempting to feign insult."
A Haley spokesman felt Harpootlian was referring to Haley’s ethnicity.
"Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend coming out of the South Carolina Democratic Party," the spokesman told Politico.
This is not the first time Harpootlian has made controversial comments. He compared Haley to Adolf Hitler’s mistress Eva Braun during last year’s Democratic National Convention.
