"Will & Grace" actress Debra Messing said Tuesday that she regretted her Monday interview with NBC host Megyn Kelly due to an awkward comment by Kelly.
Messing and other "Will & Grace" actors appeared on the first episode of "Megyn Kelly Today," Kelly's new NBC talk show, to promote the reboot of their own show. Kelly brought a fan up from the audience for a meet-and-greet, at which time she made an awkward comment, according to People.
"Is it true that you became a lawyer, and you became gay, because of Will?" Kelly asked superfan Russell Turner, whom she had invited on stage to meet his television idols.
Turner laughed at Kelly's comment and responded in good humor.
"I look at Will Truman and I’m like, ‘He has it made!’ Lawyer, best apartment in New York City, and gay?" Turner said. "Come on, trifecta."
"I think the 'Will & Grace' thing and the gay thing is going to work out great!" Kelly said, prompting Turner to agree.
Several people on Twitter criticized Kelly's "awkward" and "cringeworthy" comments, calling her "gay thing" comment out of touch and "clueless."
Messing responded Tuesday to one such comment on her Instagram. The commented asked her why she and her co-stars appeared on the Megyn Kelly show.
"Honestly I didn't know it was MK until that morning," Messing wrote. "The itinerary just said Today Show appearance. Regret going on. Dismayed by her comments."
The new season of Will & Grace premieres Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
