Kerry on U.S.-Italy Ties: ‘Visit Any College Campus on Friday Night and You’ll See a Toga Party’

Secretary of State John Kerry has a curious take on the U.S.-Italy bilateral relationship.

When asked Tuesday to discuss ties between the two allied countries, Kerry did not reference the NATO treaty, efforts to dislodge the Islamic State from Mosul, Iraq, or joint economic ventures. Instead, he referenced something else that both nations share.

"Visit any college campus on Friday night and you’ll see a toga party," Kerry said.

"It’s an element of fun," Kerry added.

He made the comments at a luncheon in honor of Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi hosted by Kerry and Vice President Joe Biden at the State Department.
