Internet Hero Throws Potato Salad Party

Helps feed actual needy people along the way

September 29, 2014

A Columbus, Ohio, man raised an incredible $55,000 to make potato salad.

The original goal set for the project was $10, but after the crowd-funding campaign went viral, the money poured in.

Potato salad hopeful Zack Brown, decided to take the money and throw a giant potato salad-themed party, the Associated Press reported.

An Ohio man who raised $55,000 in a joking crowdfunding appeal to pay for his first attempt at making potato salad threw a huge public party Saturday that promised "peace, love and potato salad."

PotatoStock 2014 was held in downtown Columbus and featured bands, food trucks, beer vendors and, yes, plenty of potato salad. With more than 3,000 pounds of potatoes, the charity-minded party was open to people of all ages.

The party wasn't designed just to have a good time. CNN reported it was also intended to help people.

Then it came time to do something with all those spuds and all that dough.

"I want to do the most good that I can do with this," he told Good Morning America. But Kickstarter prevents campaigners from turning their cash directly over to charities.

To get around that, Brown splurged for a concert bash called PotatoStock 2014 with concession stands and sponsorships, he said on his website, thepotatostock.com.

Proceeds from the event went to nonprofits to fight hunger in Central Ohio.

Brown invited the entire Internet to the party, and a few people did drive to Columbus from other states, according to Brown's Twitter posts.
