Wendy Sherman Attempts Joke About Republican Train Accident

Former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who led U.S. negotiations with Iran over the Iran nuclear deal, joked about the train accident today involving Republican lawmakers that killed one person and injured others.

Host Ali Velshi began the segment about Russia by quoting, in reference to the unreleased Republican memo alleging FISA abuses, an FBI agent and MSNBC guest who said that cherry-picking intelligence information can have disastrous results.

He went on to discuss the broader threat posed by Russia.

"There are real concerns that Russia is a destabilizing force in democracies around the world and that that's where our attention should be," Velshi said.

Sherman responded with an "absolutely," before making a joke about the Wednesday morning accident in Virginia, saying America doesn't need another "trainwreck."

"You know, we've seen one deadly trainwreck today. And our hearts go out to all of the families that are involved in that," the former Obama administration official said.

She proceeded to say Russia's destabilizing actions and the Trump administration's approach to the country is another "trainwreck."

"But this is a very serious trainwreck for the United States of America and for democracy," Sherman said.
