Ryan: How Can Obama Claim to be Meeting Us Halfway?

'I don't think he's learned the lesson of economics or history'

Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) sharply criticized President Obama's budget proposal for not only being late but also increasing taxes and spending Wednesday on Fox News, saying Obama's claim to be meeting Republicans halfway was nonsense.

"We cut $5 trillion in spending, he raises $1 trillion in spending and raises $1.1 trillion in taxes," Ryan said. "How do you see this as meeting us halfway?"

Ryan hoped that Obama's chained CPI plan would be a positive sign of him being "more serious" than in the past, but the facets of hiking taxes and spending with mounting debt were illogical.

"I don't think he's learned the lesson of economics or history, and he continues to repeat the same mistakes that have been made," Ryan said. "If we have any value ... we're going to help him prevent those mistakes and actually get a down payment by cutting spending, reforming entitlement programs in a smart way, growing the economy, reforming the tax code, opening up energy exploration so we can have the energy renaissance that is on the cusp in this country if we allow it to happen."
