Fox News analyst and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Peters accused China of "playing both sides" regarding the ongoing crisis in North Korea Wednesday, in order to serve its own economic interests.
"They're not using their economic leverage or their strategic leverage on North Korea," Peters said. "I've come around to thinking the Chinese really like to see us preoccupied in Korea and elsewhere so they can continue to get away with economic murder."
Peters also speculated a behind-the-scenes power struggle by the military advisers surrounding North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would only contribute to the "very worrisome" instability of the situation.
"Something else that concerns me is that Kim Jong-un may not know his own country's limitations," he said. "His generals may now be lying to him and telling him they're more capable than they are. They've triggered this rhetorical insanity he's engaged in, threatening to nuke San Diego and Hawaii, and now he doesn't know what to do and his generals are probably panicking because they know they can't beat the South Koreans and Americans."
