Former Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpaio was convicted of contempt of court by a federal judge on Monday.
U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton convicted Arpaio, the former "toughest sheriff in America," of failing to stop his immigration sweeps for 17 months after another judge had ordered him to stop, KTAR reports.
Arpaio said his failure to comply was due to an error of one of his attorneys and that it was not intentional. The 85-year-old will be sentenced in October.
Arpaio is famous for his "tent city" prison, where inmates sleep outside in old Army tents and are forced to wear pink clothing.
Arpaio had been sheriff for about two decades, but his tenure ended when he was defeated in 2016 for reelection. Arpaio was a major supporter of President Donald Trump because of his strict stance on illegal immigration.
The former sheriff now faces up to six months in prison, but is not expected to face that. Arpaio's trial had gone on for some time after multiple legal challenges, and was rejected for review by the U.S. Supreme Court.
