North Korea attempted to fire a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Friday, but it apparently blew up over land.

Tensions have been high on the Korean Peninsula as the rogue regime has been testing missiles in defiance of demands from the international community to cease such actions and freeze its nuclear weapons program.

Such provocations raised alarms in the region as the American aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and a strike group composed of American and Japanese ships are operating in the area in an effort to deter further action by North Korea.

The missile believed to have been tested was a KN-17, a medium-range missile, which was launched from Pukchang Airfield, CNN reports. The missile reportedly flew approximately 30 to 40 kilometers before blowing up, according to a spokesman for U.S. Pacific Command.

Other reports say the launch was considered a failure for the missile that was used.

The White House announced that President Donald Trump had been briefed on the matter.
