Van Hollen Admits Dems Should Do More on Entitlements

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D., Md.) acknowledged Democrats need to be willing to do more on entitlements during an appearance alongside Sen. Rob Portman (R., Ohio) on "Face the Nation" Sunday.

Portman said tax reform was necessary to help grow the economy during a period of slow recovery, and President Obama and Democrats had not put adequate reforms to entitlements on the table to reach a grand bargain.

"The problem right now is we don't see from the president any structural changes in this unsustainable course on the entitlements," Portman said. "And yet we see the requests for more and more taxes at a time when we just raised taxes $620 billion on the American economy."

After Portman finished, CBS host Bob Schieffer asked Van Hollen whether Democrats had to more than they had been previously willing in that area.

"We are, and the president has proposed that," Van Hollen said. "The difference is a difference in approach when it comes to Medicare."
