TV Pilot About Modern-Day Civil War Axed for Hitting 'Too Close to Home' After Election

TNT has cancelled its planned political drama series "Civil" because the television channel thought the pilot episode on a modern-day American civil war too closely resembled real-life events following the 2016 presidential election.

"Civil" would have taken place in the aftermath of a highly contested presidential election as the U.S. was spiraling downward into a civil war, Deadline reported Tuesday. The drama would have weaved together the personal stories of a diverse group of citizens and starred Bradley Whitford and Courtney B. Vance, with actors Toby Jones and Enrique Murciano also playing prominent roles.

The show's pilot episode, which was picked up in May, was set to premiere on TNT in the fall, possibly in November, before the series launch in January 2017.

TNT's plans for "Civil" were put on hold in August to delay the process before the network passed on the series altogether.

"A decision was made not to rush the project to series. The network eventually passed on it. Some observers say it may have felt too close to home," Deadline reported.
