Republican Donald Trump won the state of Ohio on Tuesday, picking up a key swing state in the presidential race.
ABC and NBC called the race in favor of Trump over Democrat Hillary Clinton at 10:30 p.m. EST, three hours after polls closed in the state, with the Associated Press declaring the Republican nominee the winner shortly afterward. Trump was capturing 53 percent of the vote with roughly two-thirds of precincts reporting, while Clinton followed behind with 42 percent.
The race for Ohio was highly contested going into Tuesday's voting. Clinton and Trump were essentially tied in the days leading up to Election Day, according to several polls that have been released since the end of October.
Trump lost Ohio during the primary by a small margin to John Kasich, the state's Republican governor, who has refused to endorse the Republican nominee. Clinton defeated primary challenger Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) by a large margin in March, despite polls leading up to voting predicting a much closer race.
Earlier in the evening, Republican Sen. Rob Portman (Ohio) won reelection, defeating Democratic challenger Ted Strickland.
