Marcus Luttrell: 'America Is the Light'

July 18, 2016

Former U.S. Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell emotionally said "America is the light" Monday night during his remarks at the Republican National Convention.

Luttrell received the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his actions in Afghanistan and is known for co-authoring Lone Survivor, detailing his and fellow Navy SEALs' harrowing ordeal during Operation Red Wings.

Luttrell challenged the crowd in Cleveland to step up and take the fight to America's enemies, as he had.

"I challenge all of you to fight for this country and for each and every one of us," he said, his voice quivering. "Look, the world outside of our borders is a dark place, a scary place. America is the light, and her people are the goodness that grows from that. She'll always be worth fighting for, and it was my greatest honor to fight for her every day of my adult life."

The audience cheered loudly, and Luttrell concluded his remarks by saying he was thankful to have served the nation for 20 years and would spend the next 20 "paying you back."

The crowd roared as he walked off the stage.
