Williams During Coverage of France Truck Attack: We 'Plowed Over' the Last Hour

July 14, 2016

MSNBC breaking news anchor Brian Williams remarked he had "plowed over" Chris Matthews' regularly scheduled show to cover the horrific attack in Nice, France, a poor choice of words given the circumstances.

In what's being characterized as a terrorist attack, a person in a large truck Thursday sped into a crowd of revelers on Bastille Day and killed at least 77 people. He also opened fire on people from inside the truck in what was described as a "scene of horror."

Williams was speaking with reporter Katy Tur about Donald Trump's announced postponement of his vice-presidential pick in the wake of the attack.

"We have just plowed over the normal hour airtime of Chris Matthews tonight because of this confluence of breaking news, and I wanted to go to Chris while we still can and Chris, hear from you about just what we've been witnessing here," Williams said.

The remark was badly received online, with Twitter users saying it was in poor taste.
