Florida Democratic Rep. and Florida Gators superfan Corrine Brown compared her indictment on 24 federal charges to the slaying of Dallas police officers last week and suggested that resources used to investigate her might have prevented the recent mass shooting in Orlando, according to reports.
"Last week was very rough," Brown said in a statement posted to her blog and reported by WFTV9 on Tuesday. "Two black men were needlessly gunned down by police; five Dallas police officers were slain by a demented man; and on Friday I had to appear in federal court."
Brown also discussed her legal troubles in light of the mass shooting that killed 49 people and left 53 others wounded in Orlando last month on Friday, appearing to suggest that if resources had been devoted to the killer, Omar Mateen, rather than to her, the massacre might not have taken place.
"These are the same agents that was not able to do a thorough investigation of [Mateen], and we ended up with 50 people dead," Brown said.
Elizabeth White, an attorney for Brown, echoed her comments.
"Perhaps had it chosen to devote its resources more thoughtfully, 50 innocent people would be alive today," said White.
If convicted on all 24 counts, Brown would face more than 300 years in prison.
